Mental Health Tip of the Week: Get A Little Obsessed

It’s so easy to throw our own pity party. Being human means we often choose comfort and safety over anything else. Yesterday night, I came back from a mentorship meeting and someone said to me, “If you want to be successful in anything, you will have to get a little obsessive.”. What does being “a little obsessive” look like? Here are some examples:

  • Waking up 30 minutes earlier to start your day

  • Doing something that makes you uncomfortable daily

  • Reading or listening to content that is associated with your goals and dreams

  • Daydreaming and brainstorming about what you could do once you reach your goals

  • Refocusing your attention on your goal even when life gets tough

  • Reflecting on your efforts to reach your goals (“What went well today? What could I have done better? How can I do better tomorrow?”)

These are just some genuine examples of activities that make an individual “a little obsessed” with their goals. Being obsessed is not selfish. Putting your needs first before a social event or gathering is not greedy. People might look at you and think you're doing too much, but in reality, they aren’t doing enough. They might question you and make you think that you're wrong, but you're not. Many individuals won't become the best versions of themselves because they can’t outlast their old versions of themselves.

BE EXTRA, AND KEEP GOING! Don’t miss out on opportunities because you're too caught up in your image! Anything that is worth having, will take hard work and dedication. It will take long nights and early mornings. Maybe you’ll choose to go to the gym after a 12-hour shift. Or maybe you decide to start cutting out soda and replacing it with a low-sugar substitute. Whatever it is, allow yourself time to feel your struggle and frustration. One day, you will look back at your current situation and think, “Thank God I decided to change that day”.

My final words of wisdom:

Let the future you be grateful for putting in the work right now. START TODAY. SCREW PERFECTION!
